Collections Manager

This individual will be a standout presence in our team, reporting directly to facility owner and facility veterinarian. Position will supervise and manage a team of keepers and ensure husbandry and behavioral management practices are executed to the standards of the facility and the expressed mission statement.
Essential Duties:
Complete oversight of the living collection. Responsible for, but not limited to:
Diets & Nutrition
Daily preparation of all diets, in accordance with veterinary approved nutritional plan.
Position will be responsible for developing, presenting, and implementing dietary/supplementation plan changes as needed for the collection. Will include ordering/sourcing from feed/perishable providers.

Preventative Care
Position will track and assist with the implementation and execution of preventive medicines and treatments. Position will also assist facility veterinarian during non-routine veterinary care procedures and treatments. Position will have direct communication with facility vet.

Oversee and assist in developing and executing enrichment programs with keepers. Responsible for compiling keeper notes for regulatory compliance and reporting to management.

Position will closely track cycles, courting, mating, and births within the living collection. Documentation and planning required to maintain ideal conditions for the collection through the natural process (dietary/supplementation changes, off exhibit monitoring, environmental changes, etc).
Position will also coordinate with other facilities for acquisition and disposition purposes related to propagation and breeding program success.
(Will require participation in current and planned SSP relationships)

Regulatory & Accreditation Standards
Position will become well versed in both federal and state regulatory requirements, licensing and reporting methods and application processes. Position is responsible for full compliance to all accreditation and regulatory standards directly related to the living collection and their husbandry.
(USDA AWA, NYSDEC, NYS Ag & Markets, ZAA Accreditation Standards)

Keeper Team Oversight
Position will work alongside, assist, and train keeper staff to successfully implement new programs and improve preexisting programs. Position is completely responsible for the implementation of requests from ownership and facility veterinarian. Position will be a point of leadership and guidance for Keeper Team. Position will require staff recruitment, training, scheduling, development and implementation of efficiency planning in daily routines, maintaining daily communication with Keeper Team, coaching and mentoring; all while creating, fostering and maintaining a positive team-orientated work environment. Position will need be able to perform all Keeper duties as needed to cover staff vacancies or emergencies. Position will also include performance management; reporting of staff shortcomings, noncompliance, disciplinary issues to facility management.

Emergency Response
Position will be responsible for maintaining emergency response protocols, in addition to staff training through meetings and real-time drills. Position will require a leader in time of crisis.

Facility Guests
Provide quality guest service to both internal and external guests by maintaining a professional, energetic, and educationally based presence. Our guests are as important as our animals; working together to promote conservation and preservation.

General Facility:
Collaborate with internal staff and departments to ensure the maintenance, renovation, and improvements of areas of concern or attention.

Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in exotic animal husbandry.
Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Proven organizational skills with the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
Excellent oral, written communication, interpersonal and managerial skills.
Ability to successfully solve complex problems and serve as resource to others.
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Able to bend, stoop, crawl, and walk on uneven surfaces.
Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
Possession of a valid driver license.
